Hunting for food in the cities has become too risky, especially since the Feds created the American Shadowlands Task Force (ASTF). Although always having lived in the dark recesses of the fabric of life, now werewolves and vampires must take extra precautions to avoid detection.
Viola Powers was only recently afflicted with lycanthropy. She is still too novice to control when she shifts into her wolf self. When the moon is almost full she hides in the mountains in order to evade to ASTF. Viola relies on her boyfriend of many years to bring her living food - half drugged victims - from urban centers. It's the only thing that will satisfy her wolf self.
At the appointed time Viola sees him, faithful as ever, with another meal draped in his arms. But worry is in his eyes and across his brow. Viola can smell it. He's never seen her in full transformation before. He pauses and tries to look away, swallowing his fear. Viola tries to focus on the meal he has brought her, but there is something exciting about his fear. More than fear.
Viola understands that her carnal desires cannot be sated with one meal today. Her lover's thinly veiled anxiety whets her appetite. She looks to him and tries apologize for what she's about to do, but instead her wolf self bellows low in register. It hits him like a straight punch to the solar plexus.
